Former Windsor Spitfire Ben Johnson has been granted bail by a judge in Toronto.
As CTV News first reported last week, Johnson has hired new lawyer James Lockyer. He is the founding director of the Association In Defence of the Wrongly Convicted.
Lockyer is appealing Johnson’s conviction for the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl at the former Mynt Nightclub in Windsor in March 2013.
He was sentenced last week to three years in prison.
Johnson was granted bail at a hearing Tuesday in Toronto at the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Johnson was released from jail Wednesday morning, and according to Lockyer's staff, he will reside in Ontario.
No date has been set for a judge to hear Johnson’s appeal.
