A startling discovery in Lake Erie, just west of Point Pelee.
The Ministry of Natural Resources confirms an Asian carp was caught by a commercial fisherman in a net around 9:30 a.m. Friday.
It was a Grass carp, a member of the Asian carp family.
MNR Spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski tells CTV Windsor the invasive species measured 94.5 centimetres in length and weighed just over 10 kilograms.
Kowalski admits they are concerned about the discovery since the species is only known to have been found near Monroe, Michigan and Sandusky, Ohio.
Kowalski says the carp will now be sent to a Fisheries and Oceans Canada lab in Burlington for testing.
Officials will determine if the species is fertile, or sterile.
Kowalski says if the carp is fertile, it means the species could be reproducing in Lake Erie.
