A deal with Samsung Renewable Energy will see a new solar farm, which could power up to 6,000 homes.
By 2016, 400 acres of airport land could have solar panels producing up to 50 megawatts of electricity.
The public was invited to find out more about the project at a meeting in the airport Thursday evening.
The project manager says the concept is in the beginning stages. Bruce McAllister adds more research is needed to ensure the farm will not affect airport operations.
The deal involves Samsung leasing the land for 24 years for $25-million.
Still some nearby residents don’t like the idea.
David Panton questions whether it’s the best use of land which is being rented to farmers.
A local solar generator, Klaus Dohring from Green Sunrising, says Samsung is getting preferential treatment which isn’t available to smaller operations.
"Some critics in the business say we want the same deal. but not everyone has a license for 50 megawatts, you need to be approved and Samsung has that," says Mayor Eddie Francis.
Another public meeting will be held in January.
Officials hope to start construction at the beginning of 2016.
