The competitive side city’s $78 million family aquatic complex will officially be known as The Windsor International Aquatic Centre presented by the Windsor Family Credit Union.
The family fun aquatic side will have a separate name and the city will begin a competitive process involving community input to help with the branding.
The new name was announced on Thursday evening by Mayor Eddie Francis.
"It promotes not only to our community, community access, community use, community pride - but promotes it to the international world that this is an international aquatic centre."
Francis hopes the centre will attract competitive swimmers, some who have told him the province desperately needs a training centre.
Credit Union CEO Marty Komsa helped draft the deal worth $2.2 million over the next 25 years, "WFCU over the years, made it our mission, I want to repeat -- made it our mission, to make Windsor the best place to live and work.”
Besides the upcoming International Children’s Games which begin on Thursday, there are seven other events scheduled at the centre which are expected to bring a total of more than 5,000 competitive swimmers.
