The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society saw a record number of cats spayed and neutered this month.

Teaming up with Petsmart Charities of Canada, the organization’s veterinary clinic spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated 406 free-roaming cats. Surgeries were also performed on 209 owned cats in the area.

Surgeries in April were offered for free across Canada, but Windsor and Essex County accounted for more than half of all community cat spays and neuters offered across the country.

The humane society said in a statement the surgeries on community cats help the cats’ health and prevent “nuisance behavior” from bothering residents.

Those who missed the clinic can still access the service for $50.

Since opening in late 2011, almost 15,000 dogs, cats and rabbits have been spayed or neutered at the humane society’s clinic.
