A 48-year-old Chatham man is facing impaired driving charges after police say he had double the legal limit of alcohol in his system while driving on Highway 401 near Tilbury.

Chatham-Kent OPP were called to the eastbound lanes of the 401 at 10:48 p.m. Thursday. Officers say a vehicle was swerving across the lanes of the highway.

Police tried to stop the vehicle, but he kept driving for about six kilometres, eventually stopping at the Bloomfield Road off ramp.

Investigation determined the driver had consumed alcohol and was showing signs of impairment. He was arrested and taken for alcohol testing, which police say revealed he was more than double the legal limit.

Mark Allott, 48, is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, exceeding 80 milligrams of blood alcohol content, flight from a police officer and driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor.
