Members of the Essex County OPP laced up their skates Sunday afternoon to drop the puck against former NHL players.

The annual NHL Alumni hockey game was played at the Essex Centre Sports Complex in front of a crowd of a couple hundred.

Jim Chauvin, an Essex County OPP Constable and game coordinator, said the funds raised from admission support Special Olympics Ontario.

“So, this game is played in several cities throughout the province, and most games raise approximately $10,000 per game,” Chauvin said, adding that 8 to 10 games are played in various communities yearly.

Chauvin said last year Special Olympics Ontario raised $1 million through the various events they run.

“Our local athletes compete in various levels of games, including local, provincial, national and world games as well,” he said.

“So, this is basically here as a fundraiser and for an event for community to get together with their family members to come over for an afternoon of some entertainment.”

Despite stiff competition and a slim chance at victory, Chauvin said many members of local law enforcement were looking forward to the matchup.

This year’s alumni lineup was headlined by former Windsor Spitfire forward Zack Kassian. The team also featured the likes of Mike Krushelnyski, Brandon Prust and Bryan Muir.

Essex County K9 Services Owner Dave Walsh told CTV News he attended the game as both a fan and a sponsor.

In addition to supporting the OPP, Walsh said the game was a rare opportunity to meet players he used to watch hit the ice since going pro.

“The OPP give back so much to the community they work hard then do things like this afterward,” Walsh said after the first period.

“The cool part is these guys were playing when I was younger too so it's awesome to meet those guys.”

The NHL Alumni Tour will continue on Jan. 26 in London at the Western Fair Sports Center.
