Chatham-Kent is becoming a safer place to live, at least according to numbers released this week.

Most recent stats show a two-per cent overall reduction in crime from 2014. There were no murders in 2015 and only one attempted murder.

Police Chief Gary Conn notes the violent crime numbers are even better compared to the provincial and national average, which rose 1.5 per cent.

Chatham Kent Mayor Randy Hope credits the police and community awareness for the drop in crime.

Police say social media and crime stoppers play an integral role in curbing all criminal activity.

But Conn tells CTV Windsor there is still more work to do.

Stats for most non-violent offences remain higher than the national average.

In 2015 vehicle thefts in Chatham-Kent spiked dramatically – from 132 in 2014 to 200 in 2015.
