Blak’s Bakery owners are in shock after an incident at their bakery left a senior family member with severe injuries on Saturday.
A senior member of the family, Peter Blak, 89, is in critical condition in hospital and police are investigating how he was injured at Blak’s Bakery. He was discovered unconscious by a family member at the bakery at 1022 Langlois Ave. around 7:30 p.m.
"We're all kind of in shock and reeling from the events that have happened," says his son, bakery owner Tony Blak.
Tony Blak says his father is still in the Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday, but he seems to be improving. His father underwent surgery on Sunday.
"I think he's a little bit better today than he was yesterday,” says Tony Blak. “But every step he takes is a very small step and we're just hoping for a little bit better improvement every day."
Although they are in shock, Tony Blak says the family is touched by the outpouring of support from the community during this difficult time.
Windsor police say a search of Blak’s inventory revealed that items were missing from the shop. It’s unclear what exactly was taken.
Police aren't yet calling the incident an assault or a robbery. Sgt Matt D’Asti says they are trying to determine exactly how Peter Blak sustained his injuries.
"We don't have anything to confirm criminality at this point,” says D’Asti. “But we have to remain objective and not miss anything."
The Windsor police major crimes unit is asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
The bakery has been owned and operated by the Blak family since 1918. It is known for brick oven bread and a traditional Polish pastry called Paczki.
