Unifor Local 444 held a weekend meeting to discuss ways to save transport jobs at the Windsor Assembly plant.
At Sunday’s meeting at the Caboto Club, officials told the media they plan to strike a committee to find other costs savings that would save the transport jobs. The union said the company has agreed to work with them.
On March 24, FCA officials told Unifor in writing that the company would eliminate ground transport services.
The job losses, affecting 280 workers, are slated to take effect September 24.
Unifor has until August 18 to submit a list of cost-saving measures to the company. Savings of between $10 million and $12 million is what the company says it will need.
"The company is going to have another group of individuals that are going to sit and work out almost like a mini set of negotiations," said Local president Dino Chiodo.
This news comes as Chiodo is stepping down.
Chiodo has accepted a job with the union's national office as automotive director. He would start on Aug. 1.
