AJAX, Ont. - An Ontario family says their 24-year-old son who was studying in Romania was on board a Malaysia Airlines plane that was downed over Ukraine.
Sorin Anghel says his son Andrei was in medical school in Romania but was travelling to Bali on that flight for a vacation.
He says Durham Regional police visited their Ajax, Ont., home to break the news.
Anghel says his son was a very kind, outgoing man who liked meeting other people.
The airline has said at least one Canadian was among the 298 people killed after a surface-to-air missile brought down the Amsterdam-to-Kuala Lumpur flight Thursday over Ukraine.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has issued a statement expressing shock and sadness about the destruction of the plane and said Canada is willing to assist authorities in determining the cause of the crash.
