ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Zoo says it broke its attendance record in 2015, attracting nearly 1.5 million visitors.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says its previous modern-day record, set in 1997, was about 1.3 million. Last year's mark is the ninth consecutive year the zoo's attendance has exceeded a million.

The zoo's annual "Wild Lights" holiday display drew more than 144,000 visitors. The zoo says the Cotton Family Wolf Wilderness, which opened in June, also was a popular attraction.

The zoo says the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, which is scheduled to open in April, is expected to further increase attendance numbers.
