A 23-year-old Windsor man charged with first-degree murder has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
Kevin Poblete was sentenced in Superior Court Friday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.
Poblete pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder today, telling the court "I'd like to apologize to the family of Leonardo. I feel terrible. I take full responsibility."
Leonardo Iacono, 49, was shot in December, 2013. Ten-months later he died after suffering a seizure.
A post-mortem exam found the cause of his death to be directly related to the injuries he received when he was shot, upgrading an initial charge of attempted-murder to first degree.
Assistant Crown attorney Bryan Pillon read victim impact statements from Iacono's family.
Police say on Dec. 9, 2013, Poblete and another unidentified man entered Iacono's apartment on Langlois.
Police said the home invasion was drug related.
Defence lawyer John Getliffe says Poblete has a chance to rehabilitate.
"He'll have an opportunity, if he chooses, to take it to get skills,” says Getliffe. “And hopefully able to come back into society and be a useful member and employable member of society."
Pillon says police are still actively looking for the second suspect in the home invasion.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call police.
