Almost 200 Catholic teachers with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board will be laid off by the end of the year.
Over 120 catholic elementary teachers and as many as 70 high school teachers will receive layoff notices.
The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association says layoffs are due to declining enrolment and budget pressures.
President Brian Hogan adds he believes the board is also laying off more teachers than necessary in order to balance the books quickly, as opposed to over time.
School board officials say some staff may be able to come back depending on attrition.
