After social media campaigns and calls for Teresa Piruzza to run for mayor, the former Liberal MPP has decided to not seek Windsor’s top job.
In a news release Friday morning, Piruzza says she gave “serious consideration”, but decided not to run for mayor of Windsor.
“Many of you suggested that I consider running for mayor. I am humbled by the number of calls and messages that I have received over the past several weeks,” she stated.
Calls for Piruzza to run for mayor started immediately after she lost her seat in Windsor-West to NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky, in Ontario’s June 12 provincial election.
Instead of mayor, Piruzza will transition over to the private sector, becoming the director of external affairs for Chrysler Canada. The automaker tells CTV Windsor that she will act as a company liaison with the provincial and federal government.
Does her hiring mean talks could resume between Chrysler and the government? Auto analyst Tony Faria doesn’t think so. Faria says most of those talks normally take place with executives in Auburn Hills, Mich.
To date, seven people have announced their intentions to run for mayor, most recently Ward 1 councillor, Drew Dilkens.
