The boxes you put into the garbage or recycling bin each week could be telling would-be thieves how many new gifts are in your home.

The West Region Ontario Provincial Police want to remind homeowners to carefully dispose of packaging to avoid a possible break-in.

Police say many thefts take place when the Christmas holidays end and the traveling season begins.

For people planning a winter vacation over the next few weeks, police say it’s a good idea to have someone looking after the home so it has a “lived in” look. Some examples include having a friend keep your driveway clear of snow and picking up the mail while you are away.
