Windsor police say a 47-year-old man tried to swim across the Detroit River while impaired on Monday night.
Officers say the man jumped in about 11 p.m. in the 1600 block of Riverside Drive near Gladstone Avenue.
The man’s girlfriend called police, who contacted Canadian and U.S. coast guard crews. Three boats and a helicopter were deployed to search the area.
The man was found at about 12:50 a.m., floating and swimming about 500 feet from shoreline, on the Canadian side in front of the Hilton Hotel.
The Coast Guard pulled him out of the water returned him to the shore. Paramedics checked him over and determined he was not hurt.
Police say he was arrested for public intoxication.
The Harbour Master of the Windsor Port Authority is investigating and will also be referring the investigation to Transport Canada.
Windsor police and the Harbour Master are advising the public that swimming in the Detroit River is not only extremely dangerous due to the undertow in the shipping channel, but it is prohibited under the Port Authority Operating Regulations.
