A 78-year-old Windsor woman pled guilty to defrauding the federal government of over $151,000 after police say she was wrongly collecting Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan benefits for her dead husband.
She pled guilty to one count of fraud over $5,000 on July 16, resulting in a 12-month conditional sentence order, 12-month probation and restitution in the amount of $151,310.
"The RCMP remains committed to investigating these types of frauds which adversely affect the government's financial support network," said Insp. Serge Cote, officer in charge of the Windsor detachment. "The Canadian public contributes to these government programs and trust that they will be there in their retirement years."
Windsor RCMP officers conducted a two-year investigation. Officers say CPP and OAS had been fraudulently collected over a period of about 14 years.
After the investigation, the woman was charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and another three counts of uttering forged documents. As a result of the guilty plea, the five remaining criminal charges were withdrawn by the Crown.
