Whether it's a sun-seeking destination or staying within the province, the majority of Canadians plan to head out of town this holiday season.

A new Bank of Montreal survey suggests 60 per cent of Canadians will be travelling over the holidays.

The survey says a strong Canadian dollar and a rather stable economy is fuelling Canucks to get away this holiday season.

“We've determined that 39 per cent will travel within their home province, while 25 per cent will travel outside their province," says Remo DiPaolo, BMO personal banking area manager for Windsor, Ont.

Valente Travel has seen a surge in vacation bookings.

“We're still getting calls today for Christmas, New Year’s holiday," says Valente Travel CEO Al Valente.

So far they've confirmed 300 bookings totalling up to 1,000 passengers between December and January.

“The most popular destinations are where you can get to the quickest, which is the non-stop flights from Windsor to Cuba," says Valente.

Windsor International Airport is also seeing a spike in air travel. Air Canada added an extra flight and the airport is seeing an additional 140 seats per day.

“That's a fair amount per day, you multiply that by seven days a week, we're adding a fair amount of capacity just in the month of December and January," says airport CEO Federica Nazzani.

Many will also be travelling by car this holiday.

Active Green and Ross technician Richard Piche says motorists are gearing up for winter driving.

“We have seen quite a bit of activity,” says Piche. “People are coming in, just to have the car looked over."

Piche says business has gone up by 20 per cent.

“They come in, we do an oil change and we do a 30 point inspection, where we check all the fluids, tire pressure."

The survey also found Canadians will spend an average of $563 on travel - mostly due to redeeming points to offset vacation costs.
