Two Windsor police officers are facing assault charges after the Special Investigations Unit investigated an incident involving a 24-year-old man.

SIU director Tony Loparco said in a news release it is related to an injury sustained by 24-year-old Matthew Jonsson in October of 2014.

The SIU says the injury occurred around the time of Jonsson’s arrest on October 26, 2014.

Chief Al Frederick says he's disappointed to hear of the charges, but won't divulge details of the incident.

Const. Daniel Merlo and Const. Aaron Naklie are each facing charges.

Merlo is charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

Naklie is charged with aid and abet an assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

The officers are required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Windsor on July 13.
