U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers are investigating after a Windsor man was shot at the Ambassador Bridge.

Officials tell CTV Windsor, that the man was attempting to enter Detroit via the Ambassador Bridge, around 3 a.m., when the man stopped his car before approaching the inspection booth.

"(He) exited his vehicle and started walking towards the primary inspection lanes waving a handgun," says Ken Hammond, Chief CBP Officer of public affairs.

Border officials say they ordered the man to drop his weapon, but when he didn't comply, officers fired at the individual. The man fell to the ground and was taken to a Detroit hospital – he has since been treated and released for his injuries.

CBP have confirmed that the Windsor native has had previous encounters with Canadian law enforcement. He remains in custody.

Meanwhile, Windsor police also had an altercation with the suspect.

Around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning, Windsor Police received a call from a citizen regarding a man in a black Ford Explorer with a gun in the parking lot of a Howard Ave. McDonald's.

Once at the scene, a manexited the vehicle holding a firearm in his hand.

The suspect began to walk in the direction of the McDonald's and was ordered at gunpoint to drop his weapon.

The suspect then turned in the direction of the officers and pointed the firearm at them.

Police say the man said, "Why haven't you shot me yet?" He then entered his vehicle and drove over the sidewalk and curb.

The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General and CBP's Office of Internal Affairs are collaborating with Detroit police on the investigation.
