Windsor police say they have arrested and charged a Windsor man after a homicide on Brant Street early Wednesday morning.

Officers were dispatched to a home in the 700 block of Brant Street for a sick or injured call around 12:30 a.m.

When police entered the home, they saw an unconscious male. EMS and Windsor fire attended, but the 52-year-old man, Dan Major, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"My uncle wasn't able to escape,” says Major’s niece Thelma Smith. “The only way he escaped was in a body bag this morning.”

Stephen Smith says Major worked for a local roofing company, that he was well respected and says in recent months, feared for his life.

“I've worked with him for 14 years,” says Smith. “He came to my house and he pled for help."

A man who was also at the scene was placed under arrest for murder, say police.

Derek Gammon, 34, has been charged with first degree murder after appearing in court on Wednesday.

Police say the victim and the accused are known to each other.

Windsor police detectives in the major crimes unit continue to investigate.

This is the second homicide on the street this year. Colin Chrisjohn, 24, from Windsor is charged with second-degree murder after the body of Amir Hayat Malik, a 32-year-old Windsor man, was found in an alley behind 563 Brant Street on June 4.
