WINDSOR -- Fiat-Chrysler's Windsor Assembly Plant and its feeder plants will be idled for a week.

The union, Unifor local 444 said Friday it has just been notified of the layoff for the week of Nov. 4.

FCA says the shut-down is due to an "internal capacity constraint."

Industry insiders say 'constraint' means, there is a backlog of inventory.

FCA and the union meanwhile say there is no new information about the future of the third shift.

In August, it was announced the third shift has been extended until at least the end of 2019.

About 1,500 employees work on the third shift at WAP.

FCA Canada first announced the elimination of the third shift on March 28, 2019.

It was first expected to take place on Sept. 30, but got pushed back to Oct. 21 and then the end of 2019.

The Windsor Assembly Plant currently employs 6,000 workers and produces nearly 1,500 minivans a day when operating at full volume.

Unifor did announce in April that FCA is investing $355 million in the Windsor Assembly Plant in the hopes of landing a new product.

But the automaker has made no official announcement.

The Windsor Assembly Plant underwent a $1 billion retooling in 2015 to start building the Chrysler Pacifica.
