A decision at the public school board will see one area school close by the end of next year.

The Greater Essex County District School Board made the decision Tuesday night to close Victoria public school in Tecumseh, effective June 2014.

Students from Victoria will be transferred to A.V. Graham elementary school.

It's difficult for the families, difficult for the students and the staff,” says board chair Helga Bailey. “In the long run I think everybody realizes, especially when we saw the reaction of parents when we went out to the community, they actually understood why we have to do this.”

Pending approval from the Ministry of Education, trustees have also agreed to eventually replace D.M. Eagle public school. The process would involve either expanding A.V. Graham or by building a new school in the north shore area.

Starting in September, Forest Glade will now be a dual-track school, offering English and French immersion.
