The University of Windsor board of governors have approved new designs, which would see Sunset Avenue closed to vehicular traffic.

The board of governors approved phase one of the Campus Master Plan, Tuesday. The plan consists of seven activity and access zones that link to Sunset, which would see the road turned into a public space.

Sunset is scheduled to close in the summer of 2014, following construction upgrades to California Avenue.

“Phase one of the Campus Master Plan re-imagines our physical spaces in ways that will enhance the experience we want our students to have,” says university president, Alan Wildeman.

In addition to Sunset, Fanchette Street will be transformed into a pedestrian gateway. The existing street scape will be completely refurbished, including large planters, benches and expansive bicycle parking.

“The creative designs in this phase provide new campus gateways, and functional outdoor spaces that will offer everyone places to gather and relax, enjoy recreational activity, or celebrate an event,” says Wildeman.

An exact cost for the project has not been released.
