WINDSOR, Ont. - Campus police at the University of Windsor will soon be trained to use pepper spray.

After the required training, the university says pepper spray will be issued to qualified officers "in the near future."

Back in October 2014, Windsor's police services board approved its use for special constables employed at the university.

The Windsor police service training branch provides the training to campus police officers including mandatory training in use of force and defensive tactics.

Back in 2008, an independent firm was selected by the university to study the feasibility of campus police officers being armed with pepper spray.

It was recommended that it be used as a "use of force" option.
