Students at the University of Windsor are trying to break a record for the most tests completed for Sexually Transmitted Infections in 24 hours at a single location.
The “Tees for Pee” event giving participants free T-shirts that say “I peed today.”
The University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, the UWSA Womyn’s Centre, the Student Health Services and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s Clinical Services Department are working together for the event.
It is intended to raise awareness of the importance of getting tested, reduce the stigma of getting tested, and raise awareness of sexually transmitted infections and how to prevent them.
Health unit officials say the rate of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in Windsor-Essex County from 2009 until 2014 was significantly lower than the Ontario rate for all years. The rates are highest among teens and young adults.
The STI testing is taking place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Ambassador Auditorium.
The Canadian record of 516 tests in a single day is currently held by Western University in London. The current world record of 767 STI tests was set on Feb. 14, 2013 in Basingstoke, England.
