A 29-year-old Michigan man and a 17-year-old Michigan youth are facing weapons charges after an incident that led to the closure of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel for nearly three hours Tuesday night.

Police say they entered Canada in a 2004 Dodge Durango and were directed to secondary inspection by Canadian Border Services Agency staff.

During a search of the vehicle, officers say a bag was found that contained a suspicious device.

The tunnel was closed and the CBSA plaza was evacuated.

The Windsor Police Explosives Disposal Unit went to the scene and deployed a robot in order to get a closer look at the package.

Police say the device was an unmarked commercial grade smoke bomb. Several weapons were also discovered in the vehicle, including two butterfly knives and a set of brass knuckles.

The two suspects are expected to appear in court this afternoon in relation to weapons charges.

The 29-year-old from Clarkston Michigan is charged with three counts of possession of a prohibited weapon and three counts of importing a prohibited weapon into Canada.

The 17-year-old is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and importing a prohibited weapon into Canada.

The investigation continues.
