A tractor trailer with a load of baking soda flipped on its side on Highway 401 near Tilbury Wednesday morning, causing several delays in the eastbound lanes.

Essex County OPP say around 10:15 a.m., a tractor and trailer unit merging onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 from Essex County Road 42 suddenly lost control.

The white freightliner was merging onto the highway with its load of Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) when it flipped onto its side.

The truck and trailer came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401, slowing traffic for several hours.

The contents of the tractor trailer needed to be off loaded by hand and one lane of Highway 401 eastbound continues to be closed.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Police say the investigation is continuing.
