The battle to hold back rising water levels in Lake St. Clair continues for shoreline residents in Tecumseh.
Town administration presented a report at Tuesday evening’s council meeting, outlining that 46 property owners had collected 100 sandbags each since the program began two weeks ago.
Properties along the north side of Riverside Drive from the City of Windsor to Pike Creek and along Pike Creek from Lake St. Clair to the VIA Rail line were eligible.
The $50,000 sandbagging program is scheduled to continue until mid-June, and residents will need to continue to show proof of address.
Sand is available in the Lakewood Park South parking lot. Residents are required to bring their own shovels and fill the bags themselves.
Staff from the Essex Region Conservation Authority have said it's not a matter of if, but when flooding will occur, due to record high water levels and severe weather events.
Municipal staff say they will continue to look into additional protective measures.
Windsor, Amherstburg, LaSalle, Lakeshore, Leamington and Essex have also offered sand bags to residents to help protect their properties.
ERCA officials urge residents to use sandbags to protect “assets” like homes and garages.
