Windsor police have launched an education campaign about synthetic marijuana after an investigation apparently confirms it contains illegal components.
The drugs and guns unit received information in January about the fake pot being sold in Windsor stores under the brand name of IZMS. This product was marketed as “legal" marijuana.
Police say it is sold in brightly coloured packages with various flavours and strengths. It resembles marijuana and is designed to be smoked.
Police sent a sample of the product to Health Canada for analysis. The organization confirmed that the IZMS products sold locally contains synthetic cannabinoids and that these cannabinoids are illegal.
Chief Al Frederick has written letters to local store owners asking them to remove the products.
People caught in possession of or selling the product could face prosecution. Police went to stores Wednesday to make sure there aren’t any on the shelves.
