A group of students fed up with the ongoing strike at the University of Windsor are trying to take matters into their own hands.

Several students joined CUPE 1393 workers Monday in a large march around campus, demanding money back for cancelled classes.

Travis Reitsma, a graduate student in the Department of Sociology and member of CUPE Local 4580 representing Graduate and Teaching Assistants has begun an occupation of the office of president Alan Wildeman.

Reitsma says he hopes that others in the campus community will join him in an effort to force the university’s administration to reach an agreement with its striking workers.

The occupation started Monday morning and it will continue during business hours daily until Friday, if necessary. He says the occupation will proceed on a continuous 24-hour basis starting on Oct. 7 if the work stoppage continues beyond that point.

The University of Windsor Students’ Alliance has planned also planned a rally on Tuesday at 1 p.m.in the quad in front of Chrysler Tower. The students are demanding an immediate resolution between the two sides.

CUPE 1393 workers have been on strike since Sept. 8. Talks broke down over the weekend. The union represents about 280 skilled trades and professional staff, including equipment technicians, carpenters and graphic designers.
