Fans of the Windsor Spitfires can relive the OHL’s latest Memorial Cup Championship.
The Spitfires will raise their third Canadian junior hockey championship banner Thursday night prior to their game against the London Knights at 7:05 p.m.
London knocked Windsor out of the first round of the OHL playoffs after a seven game series last spring. That led to an improbable run for the Spitfires after a 44 day layoff.
The Spits would win every single game in the tournament, including a 4-3 win over OHL rivals Erie in the final at the WFCU Centre.
Windsor, the 10th host club to win since 1983, is the first team that didn't win their league title to capture the Memorial Cup since the 2012 Shawinigan Cataractes. In fact, the Spits are the first team to win after exiting their league playoffs in the first round.
Windsor also won the Memorial Cup in 2009 and 2010, and have a 12-game winning streak at the tournament.
Although most of last year’s Spitfires team won’t be in attendance Thursday night, former co-captain Jeremiah Addison will be at the WFCU Centre.
Addison is with the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and is recovering from shoulder surgery.
