Provincial police in Lakeshore used a spike belt to help catch a 23-year-old Alberta man who failed to pull over.

It happened on Sunday at 3:45 a.m. Officers tried to stop a vehicle travelling westbound on County Road 42. Police say he didn’t stop when signalled to do so.

A spike belt was deployed and the front tires deflated, causing the vehicle to come to a stop just west of Elmstead Road.

The Alberta man got out the vehicle and ran into the field and further into a bush on the north side of the roadway. Officers pursued the male on foot but didn’t catch him.

Later Sunday, police say a man went to the Lakeshore detachment to turn himself in and admitted to being the driver.

Zachary Campeau, 23 of Red Deer, Alta., was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, racing a motor vehicle, flight from police officers, driving a motor vehicle not equipped with an approved ignition interlock device.

He will appear in a Windsor court on June 4.
