Members of Unifor locals 195 and 2458 both overwhelmingly ratified their respective contracts ensuring no interruption in service on Monday evening.

According to the Unifor local 2458 President, Bruce Dickie, his members agreed to a modest raise and better job security language. “ You never know what the numbers will be, but certainly we're quite pleased with the results."

The local, which represents approximately 400 clerical staff and engineers at the University of Windsor voted 97% in favour of the 3-year deal.

Unifor Local 195 represents close to 30 campus police and parking service employees.

Local President Gerry Farnham says his members ratified with 92% who voted yes. "Both sides had the will to get this done, we stayed at the table, and managed to pull out a collective agreement that suits not only our members but I think the university as well."

Farnham says the deal will give workers a 1.5% raises each year over the 3-year term and includes important improvements to job security language with no concessions.

It’s quite a different story for CUPE Local 1393, made up of some 300 university support staff who are now in the second week of a strike.

While pleased to hear other locals reached a deal, Local President, Dean Roy says it's frustrating that his members are on the sidewalks striking rather than at the table. but is hopeful Unifor's collective agreement will pave the way for a better deal. "I think it's definitely going to affect things at the bargaining table. Hopefully they're going to give that language to the rest of us."

University President Alan Wildeman says each bargaining unit has unique needs, but there has to be some equity. “We do also strive to make sure that for some things we make similar kinds of commitments to all our employees."

Leadership of the striking CUPE workers have a meeting with the university and a mediator scheduled for Wednesday at 10:00.

Meanwhile CUPE 1001, which represents food service and maintenance employees will be at the table on Tuesday.

They have a strike deadline of September 22nd.
