Windsor West MP Brian Masse says the Liberals have “prioritized organized crime over good governance,” after his private member’s bill to legalize single sports betting was defeated.

Members of Parliament voted against the Bill 156-133. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce supported the legislation as did the union representing Caesars Windsor workers.

The bill was up for second reading but was defeated rather than sent to committee for further study.

Masse says the Liberals are, “…well aware of the massive revenue stream sports wagering is providing organized crime to fund human trafficking, illegal drug and weapons trade, money laundering and tax evasion."

Legislation on single event sports betting was previously introduced to parliament four years ago but stalled in the Senate.
