It's a snow day for thousands of students in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

All school buses are cancelled for the day Thursday due to the weather.

All Transit Windsor buses that provide transportation to students are operating as usual.

A record 15.6 centimetres of snowfall was reported at Windsor airport as of midnight last night.

That breaks the previous record of 13 cm set on Dec. 13, 2000.

City snow plows have main routes in Windsor in good shape while contract work crews are busy plowing residential areas.

Residents can help with the clean-up by removing vehicles from city streets where possible and ensuring to clear sidewalks abutting their property.

All sidewalks are to be cleared four hours after the snow fall and ice formation occurs for commercial property owners and 12 hours for residential property owners.

As well, under the Highway Traffic Act and City of Windsor by-laws, residents are prohibited from shovelling snow back onto the street while clearing sidewalks and driveways, as this creates unsafe road conditions for motorists.

Police have responded to several collisions across Windsor-Essex in the snow, but there have been no reports of serious injuries.

Motorists are urged to use caution approaching intersections, as stopping can be more difficult on wet pavement.

Sarnia-Lambton buses are cancelled.
