A special holiday tradition got underway today at the Salvation Army.

Long lines formed outside of the Sally Ann, as more than 200 families picked up gifts for children and food hampers to help get them through the holiday season.

This year, the toy drive will benefit more than 1000 kids, who might otherwise go without gifts this Christmas.

The Salvation Army will continue to support families in need, right up to Dec. 25.

Another 5,000 families in Windsor-Essex are receiving a helping hand from the Goodfellows.

About 60 volunteers were working hard this morning, packing boxes with everything from soup, peanut butter and mac and cheese to vegetables, pasta and jello.

The boxes were handed out to thousands of families for Christmas.

Most of the money to pay for the food was raised from the paper drive held earlier this month, when volunteers raised almost $300,000.

The Goodfellows have been handing out Christmas boxes for the last 106 years.

They want to give a huge thank you to the community.
