The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit hosted a town hall meeting Wednesday night to address the cancer cluster investigation in the Remington Park area.

The health unit answered questions from residents as well as discussed the next steps in the investigation.

Many residents came out to share their stories with the community and health care officials.

While many did find the town hall meeting beneficial, some said even after this, they are still looking for answers.

Tanya Rau has been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer.

"I was actually quite shocked when I seen the block that the people, that the individuals that have been affected by cancer. There's something wrong here".

Rau lives on the block outlined by the health unit where the 'cancer cluster' is most prevalent.

She attended the town hall meeting hoping to find answers.

"Something needs to be done,” says Rau. “It needs to be investigated. My daughter she's sick. She's always got allergies. I'm not getting any better. There's got to be more out there like me".

When the health unit refers to a cancer cluster they are referring to the higher than normal lung cancer rate that has been found in the Remington Park neighbourhood - approximately twice the rate expected.

According to the health unit, 24 cases of lung cancer were diagnosed between 2000 and 2009. The expected rate is 11.

This has prompted the investigation, which is currently in its preliminary stages.

The health unit will send out questionnaires to residents who were diagnosed with lung cancer between 2000 and 2009, in hopes of determining the cause.
