A Leamington man has been found guilty of impaired driving for his role in a crash that killed Robert Wallingford.

Jamie Redekop dropped his head on Friday while the verdict was read in a Windsor courtroom.

Justice Helen Rady ruled the statements made by Redekop of his impairment were made after he was cautioned by police to remain silent.

He also admitted to being under "the influence" after the crash, after talking to a lawyer and his parents.

Defence lawyer Julie Santarossa says they are disappointed by the verdict.

"This is something that has been incredibly traumatic for him and he feels horrible for Mr. Wallingford and his family" says Santarossa.

Redekop, who was 18 at the time, was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier on Fox Street near Askew Street in Leamington on Jan. 11, 2015.

Wallingford, 55, of Leamington, was walking when he was struck by the car. He was transported to an area hospital where he died of his injuries.

Wallingford's daughter, Tanya Monminie, tells CTV Windsor "nothing will bring their father back" but they are pleased with the judge's ruling.

"We can maybe put this behind us and instead of focusing on the way he died, we can focus on the way he lived" says Monminie, who was emotional after leaving court. "He was a good man, a wonderful grandfather and we miss him terribly."
