Windsor RCMP officers have seized 330 cartons of illegal cigarettes as a result of an investigation.

Officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 401 at the Walker Road off ramp on Thursday. Police searched the vehicle and found the illegal cigarettes hidden under a blanket in the rear of the vehicle.

The cigarettes were destined to be sold in the Windsor area, according to police.

“The sale of illegal tobacco products benefits criminal organizations who often use their profits to finance other criminal activities,” says Windsor Insp. Serge Cote.

Two Windsor men, Ali Hussien Ali-Ghezi, 50, of Windsor and Falah AlShimmari , 47, were charged with unlawful possession and receiving for sale unstamped tobacco products.

A 2002 Dodge Caravan used in the transportation of the illegal cigarettes was also seized.

The accused will appear in Windsor court on Sept. 23rd.
