Police release dash cam video of drive-by shooting on Howard Avenue
Windsor police have released a dash cam video and are searching for a suspect after a bold daytime drive-by shooting on Howard Avenue.
Officers were called to Howard near Erie Street on Wednesday around 2:15 p.m. for shots fired.
Police say they received information that a green Toyota was shooting at a black Jaguar and that both vehicles had fled the area.
When police arrived, they saw a red Nissan facing northbound on Howard with fresh damage to the windshield.
Witnesses describe it as a scary scene.
"I heard two gunshots,” says Robin Vantiegham. “I thought someone blew their tires and then I got up right away and there he was. This guy was out on his phone calling police and lady the lady in the grey van was very shook up because she witnessed it all because she was behind.”
Officers spoke with the 31-year-old driver of the Nissan. Police learned that the Nissan was north on Howard approaching Erie.
Police say the Nissan was passed by a green Toyota and as the vehicle passed, a male passenger extended his arm out of the vehicle and fired a handgun at a black Jaguar that was in front of the Nissan.
Sgt. Matthew D'Asti says this type of incident is rare in Windsor and they are taking it seriously.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation and appealing to the public if they may have any additional information that they can share with us,” says D’Asti.
The driver of the Nissan gave police his dash camera video of the incident. Police say the shooter is visible in the video footage.
The suspect fires at the driver side of the Jaguar and it appears that one of the rounds ricocheted off the Jaguar and struck the windshield of the Nissan.
The projectile travelled through the windshield, the driver's shirt collar, and then into the driver's seat. Police say it is fortunate that the driver only sustained very minor injuries from glass fragments as the projectile went through the windshield.
“They just missed the guy in the red car,” says Vantiegham. “He got very lucky. A bullet ripped his shirt by his neck."
After the shooting, the Jaguar appears to chase after the Toyota.
