A startling discovery in Amherstburg.

The Windsor Police Service Major Crimes Branch is investigating after human remains were found in a wooded area.

Police say at about 4 p.m. on Monday, officers located the suspected human remains near the 8th Concession Road between Alma Street and Texas Road.

Windsor Police Forensic Identification officers attended and examined the scene.

A Coroner attended and confirmed the remains were human.

Police are not releasing many details about the discovery.

There is no information about now how old the human remains are, and police are not saying whether they are that of a man, woman or child.

But Sergeant Steve Betteridge tells CTV News information from a separate investigation led them to this scene.

“From what our investigators have to date in this investigation, there is no direct threat to public safety whatsoever,” says Betteridge. “That being said, the community in and around that area can expect to see quite a bit of a visible police presence over the next few days as we continue this very active investigation."

A heavy police presence was seen in the area on Monday. The Windsor Police Mobile Command Bus was on scene, and officers elicited help from both Amherstburg Police and the OPP.

Officers even used a drone to search the woodlot.
