A 54-year-old Scarborough man is facing impaired driving charges after he allegedly attempted to flee police near Chatham.

It happened at 9:09 p.m. Tuesday. Chatham-Kent OPP officers say a vehicle was speeding down Highway 401 eastbound near Dillon Road.

Police followed the vehicle as it exited at the off ramp near Bloomfield Road, nearly striking the sign. Officers tried to stop the vehicle on 8th line, but the driver began to flee.

The vehicle was stopped and police say the driver was showing signs of alcohol impairment. He was arrested and taken to Chatham-Kent police headquarters for alcohol testing, which revealed he was over the legal limit.

Randy Roth, 54, has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, exceeding 80 milligrams of blood alcohol content, flight from police officer and racing a motor vehicle.
