NDP members voted Percy Hatfield as the candidate to represent the party in the Windsor-Tecumseh riding in the byelection.

"I'm overjoyed,” says Hatfield. “This was a tough fight. People thought all along that I was the frontrunner, but I knew Laurie had a lot of support."

He was selected over Laurie Komon, who narrowly lost the 2011 nomination to Andrew McAvoy.

"Disappointed, sure. But I'll give it a go again, ok folks," says Komon.

Hatfield attributes the win to his experience as Ward 7 councillor in Windsor.

“During that time, being on the federation of Canadian municipalities, being on AMO, chairing the large urban caucus in AMO," says Hatfield.

The seat was left vacant after longtime Liberal MPP and finance minister Dwight Duncan stepped down earlier this year.
