A stretch of the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway will open to traffic on Sunday.

Drivers get to try out an eight kilometre-long stretch of the redeveloped Highway 401 that will open along the parkway corridor.

Provincial officials say the project is now 90 per cent complete.

“I would like to thank the Windsor and Essex County community for their patience during construction,” says Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca. “With 90 per cent of the Herb Gray Parkway now complete, we come closer to realizing the transportation benefits the parkway will deliver to residents and drivers alike and the economic benefits this new Parkway will bring to the region.”

Motorists can drive through the parkway without traffic signals. Traffic will be shifted away from ongoing construction on the final section of the parkway.

A tallgrass prairie and oak savannah theme is integrated into all the design elements of the parkway including the on noise barriers, retaining walls, tunnel top and bridge barrier walls.

The parkway is made up of three components – an extension of Highway 401, an extension of Highway 3 and the parkway trail network set within 120 hectares of green space.

Construction of the project is expected to be completed by later this year.
