The owners of The Pastry Table are left to pick up the pieces after a fire ripped through their business Sunday morning.

Damage is pegged at $600,000 for the bakery at 1459 Tecumseh Road East.

“It was very shocking,” says Tim Mrkalj, son-in-law of the owners. “Traumatic experience for everybody."

A nearby tenant saw smoke pouring out of the building around 4 a.m. and quickly called for help.

"I mean you never think this will happen to yourself," says Mrkalj.

Crews were called to the commercial structure fire around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

“We do know the fire started in the kitchen area where they do their preparation,” says chief fire prevention officer Lee Tome.” Other than that we weren't able to pinpoint where the origin of the fire was.”

The fire was upgraded, with additional crews called in to stop the blaze from spreading.

"There was some smoke that migrated into each of the businesses,” says Tome. “The fire crews were able to ventilate that quickly."

Known for its famous mocha tortes, the bakery has been at that location for 18 years. Mrkalj says they're going to be calling anyone with pre-existing orders in the next day or so and resolving any kind of concerns.
