Provincial police are asking for public help to identify a suspect wanted in connection with a $35,000 theft from a Town of Essex residence.

Investigators say on Sunday, October 27th a home on South Malden Road was robbed of items including jewelry and electronic equipment.

Police say the thief also took passports, wills and bank information, all in broad daylight while the couple was attending Sunday mass.

Essex County OPP Const. Joseph Meloche says "They've lost a lot of personal items, there are things you can never get back."

A witness has since come forward saying they saw a suspicious person in the area at the time.

The suspect was observed driving a white, older model, four-door vehicle. He is described as 30-40 years of age with dark hair, dark clothing and a dark hat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Street Crimes Unit at 519-723-2491 or Crime Stoppers at 258-TIPS or catchcrooks.com.

Couple devastated by theft

While the family involved does not want to be identified out of fear of reprisal, they tell CTV News the break and enter has been devastating.

"Everything was locked, windows, doors. They ripped a safe out of a wall...Who would do this to us? Why? And all that stuff, we worked so hard all our life, is gone."

Meloche says it's important to remember to be extra vigilant, especially as the holiday season begins.

"If you're going to go somewhere for a few days, call your neighbours, tell your neighbours. You can let the police know. It can happen anytime. Again be vigilant, make sure your doors are locked."
