The Ontario Provincial Police is looking for two suspects after a break and enter and standoff in Comber early Thursday morning.

Police say an elderly couple woke up when they heard a man break into their house on Main Street just after midnight. After a brief struggle, the suspect left on foot and joined a female suspect who had not entered the house.

The male resident suffered minor injuries to his face, but didn’t require medical attention. He called police.

The Essex County canine unit and emergency response team tracked the suspects to a house on Knapp Road, about one kilometre from the scene of the break and enter. The OPP tactical response unit from London and a crisis negotiator were also called to the scene.

“We followed protocol, and did everything that we were supposed to do," says OPP Const. Stephanie Moniz.

At about 7:15 am, the occupants exited the house without incident. Police say after an interview it was determined they were not related to the break and enter.

“They were led to that house, they were led to believe the suspects were inside the house," says Moniz. "After interviewing them, yes they did not hear the police, they did not hear us."

Moniz says police officers were doing their due diligence.

“I certainly wouldn't call it a mistake because based on the information that the officers had at the time, is what took them to the residence on Knapp Road,"says Moniz.

Police continued to canvass the area, searching for clues throughout the day. The constant police presence has left many neighbours uneasy.

“We don't get that around here, and if it starts, obviously we're going to put the word out," says neighbour Jan Deelstra.

Police are looking for a man about 25 to 30 years old with a thin build and about six-feet tall. He had dark hair and dark complexion and was wearing a black jacket and black ball cap.

The woman is described as about 25 to 30 years old with a thin build, long thin face and long bleached-blond hair with dark roots. She was seen wearing a black jacket.
