Provincial police say one person has been sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a single-vehicle crash near Leamington.

The collision took place around 1 a.m. on Essex County Road 34 between Road 21 and Essex County Road 37 near Kopegaron Woods Conservation Area.

Essex County OPP say the vehicle involved, was travelling westbound on Essex County Road 34 when, for reasons unknown at this time, it left the roadway and struck the Kopegaron Woods sign on the south side of the road.

Leamington Fire Service, as well as Essex County EMS attended the scene to help. The lone occupant was taken to Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed for several hours, but has since been reopened.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
